Who is George Shinn and What is His Net Worth?

George Shinn is an American businessman, sports team owner, author, and motivational speaker with a net worth of $120 million. He is best known for being the former owner of NBA team “Charlotte Hornets”.

Born in 1941 in Kannapolis, North Carolina, Shinn was a poor-achieving student who worked odd jobs before graduating from Evans Business College. He then started raising money to buy several schools and consolidate them into “Rutledge Education Systems”. However, he sold the schools and used the proceeds to buy the Charlotte Hornets in 1987 for $32.5 million.

Besides the Charlotte Hornets, Shinn also owned minor league baseball teams “Charlotte Kings” and “Gastonia Rangers” as well as the American football team Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks. He started The George Shinn Foundation in 1973 to provide scholarships to deserving students, and it now focuses on raising awareness and early detection of prostate cancer.

Shinn is also an author of several books, including “The American Dream Still Works”, “Leadership Development”, and “You Gotta’ Believe”. He has three grown-up children and is currently married to Denise, who is the chair of the George Shinn Foundation.

In 2010, Shinn was not able to sell his shares of the Charlotte Hornets due to the team’s financial issues, so the NBA took over the sale.
